Brownfield Opportunity Areas Program FAQ


Q: Who is Eligible to Apply for Grant Assistance?
A: Entities that are eligible to apply for grant assistance include: municipalities; community based organizations; and municipalities and community based organizations acting in cooperation.

Q: What Activities Are Eligible for Funding?
A: Activities eligible for funding include: Pre-Nomination Studies: Nomination Studies; and Implementation Strategies including Site Assessments.

Q: What Type of Funding is Available?
A: Funding is available to cover 90 percent of the costs to complete Pre-Nomination Studies, Nomination Studies; and Implementation Strategies including Site Assessments. Local cost share is 10 percent.

Q: What Type of Applications Will Receive Funding Preferences?
A: Applications that describe areas having one or more of the following characteristics will be given funding preferences:

• Areas for which an application is partnered by a municipality and community based organization;
• Areas with concentrations of brownfield sites;
• Areas for which an applicant demonstrates support from a community based organization;
• Areas showing indicator's of economic distress, including low resident incomes, high unemployment, high commercial vacancy rates, depressed property values, and
• Areas with brownfield sites presenting strategic opportunities to stimulate economic development, community revitalization, or the siting of public amenities.

Q: When are applications due?
A: Applications must be postmarked by May 26, 2006.

Troy, NY

Troy's re-use plan outlines projects, incentives, and regulatory changes that will result in environmental clean up, new green space and public access, transportation improvement and new waterfront land uses. The City's approach relies on partnerships between its private, public and nonprofit partners to make incremental improvements to the waterfront over the next two decades.
